No Integration of Climate Education in Kenya’s Curriculum

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, yet Kenya’s formal education system has not fully integrated climate change into the national curriculum. While environmental studies are briefly covered in some subjects, there is no dedicated climate education that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address the climate crisis.

According to global frameworks such as UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the UNFCCC recommendations, young people should be at the center of climate solutions. However, in Kenya, many students graduate from secondary schools and even universities without a clear understanding of:

  • How climate change impacts their communities and livelihoods.
  • Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) and adaptation strategies.
  • Practical solutions for mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable living.

This education gap leaves students unprepared to actively contribute to Kenya’s climate goals, despite being the demographic most affected by rising temperatures, floods, droughts, food insecurity, and biodiversity loss.

Climart Africa’s Solution

At Climart Africa, we address this gap by providing non-academic scholarships, leadership training, and climate action projects that act as complementary education platforms. Through:

Climart Africa’s Solution: Empowering Students Beyond the Curriculum

At Climart Africa, we recognize that the absence of climate change education in schools is a critical barrier to building a climate-conscious generation. That is why our mandate focuses on complementing formal education with practical, student-centered climate programs that close this knowledge and skills gap.

How We Respond to the Education Gap

  1. Youth-Friendly Climate Workshops
We design training sessions that simplify climate science, policy, and sustainability concepts, making them easy for students to understand and apply in real life.

  2. Leadership Training Programs
We equip students with advocacy, communication, and leadership skills so they can engage meaningfully in climate conversations at school, community, and national levels.

  3. Student-Led Climate Action Projects
Through initiatives such as tree planting, community clean-ups, recycling campaigns, and eco-innovation challenges, we help students turn knowledge into tangible climate solutions.

  4. Mentorship & Scholarships
We support students from low-income backgrounds with non-academic scholarships and link them to mentors who guide them in climate leadership and sustainability pathways.

  5. Advocacy & Awareness Campaigns
We amplify youth voices by creating platforms where students can learn, share ideas, and influence climate policies, ensuring that Kenya’s next generation is actively involved in shaping sustainable futures.

Why This Matters

By filling the gap left by the curriculum, Climart Africa ensures that Kenya’s youth are not passive bystanders but active participants in climate action. Our work transforms students into climate leaders, innovators, and advocates, helping Kenya move closer to its national and global commitments such as the Paris Agreement, SDG 13 (Climate Action), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
